Sudbury stung by Wasps

On Saturday we travelled to Grundisburgh Playing Field where we played Witnesham Wasps in what was our 2nd league game of the season. We didn't have the best preparation going into this game, lossing 5 players to injury and sickness and then with three of our players arriving 8 minutes before kickoff due to being stuck in traffic. Unfortunately things didn't get any better once the game begun as we were 1-0 within the first minute.

We started of in a 4-5-1 formation to try and win the midfield battle and dominate possession but our numerical advantage in midfield wasn't paying off. We had good efforts on goal from Max and George, with George's shot hitting the post but Witnesham countered quickly and we were soon 2-0 down. From that moment I decided to revert back to our tried and tested 4-4-2 formation, where the boys seemed more comfortable playing. Aiden had a shot smothered by their keeper but we continued to attack and was rewarded when their keeper couldn't keep hold of Max's fierce shot and there was Stanley to tap in the rebound, game on 2-1.

Half-time came and the boys had a well deserved rest as there was only 12 of them, so only 1 substitute.

Witnesham started to pepper our goal with shots but Will was there to make two good saves within the first couple of minutes of the restart. Stanley and Jack both had shots on goal from mistakes from their keeper but we couldn't score and unfortunately we were very vulnerable at the back and to their counter attacks and Witnesham scored their 3rd goal of the game. The Sudbury players didn't let their heads drop and we continued to play our passing game and it resulted in a great move,Aiden beat his man on the right wing and cut it back to Stanley in the box who twisted his marker and layed it on a plate for Max to smash it into the net from close range a great team goal and game on again,3-2. We kept attacking their goal in search of the equaliser but was caught on the counter and Witnesham made it 4-2. Sudbury were not done yet and made it 4-3 with minutes left, a great run by Ron down the right wing who squared it to Stanley inside the box who slotted it home from close range. We didn't have many more chances at goal after that and time run out and the final whistle blew. Luck wasn't on our side from the start but the boys dug deep and put in a great effort and played some great football at times. The Wasps had more substitutes than us so were able to freshen up the team and bring on fresh legs and I believe that's what resulted in us losing this close encounter. Well done boys, keep going and a big well done to Stanley who scored his first and second goals for the club and was named man of the match.
