AFC Sudbury Academy are pleased to announce that Steve Downey will be joining our Academy in a full time capacity on Thursday 2nd January 2025.

Steve is already well known to our academy boys having coached and managed within our weekend fixture programme over the past three seasons supporting the development of the likes of Luca Terminiello, Max Brownsdon and Sam Cox who have broken into our first team squad this season. During this time Steve has held the position as sports coaching lecturer at Colchester Institute where he has managed a bespoke curriculum to enrich the education of his students.

Steve is a UEFA 'A' Licence coach and FA Coach Developer. Steve was Colchester United Head of Youth Development supporting the development of the likes of Sammie Szmodics, Greg Halford and Alex Gilbey. Furthermore, Steve has vast experience working within the female game and was Technical Director of the Essex FA Girl's Regional Talent Club (RTC) where he supported the development of many England Youth Internationals and also our current women's first team captain Leonnie Bezant.

Academy Manager Craig Power "As an academy we are delighted to attract Steve to our programme as an experienced teacher of 16-18 year olds, a UEFA 'A' licence coach and coach developer. His experiences will be of benefit to all staff and students. To maintain our status as a leading academy in the non league sector it is vitally important to continue to recruit highly skilled staff members and with Kayleigh Steed joining in the Summer of 2024 I believe we continue to show the emphasis we place as an academy on recruiting the best in class staff.
