AFC Sudbury Vs Cornard Dynamos U13’s

Kevin Pettet19 Aug 2023 - 12:46

Man of the Match performance on his 75th club appearance for Jack Vidler

Today we welcomed Cornard Dynamos for our 3rd pre-season friendly.

Sudbury started brightly but we’re soon having to defend a Cornard counter attack. George, playing at centre back today, read the attack well and marshalled the ball out of play.

With every Cornard attack, George seemed to grow in confidence and was commanding the back line.

Sudbury were creating chances and our best chance soon fell to Jack V, making his 75th appearance for the club today. Max, playing at left back, clearing the ball which found it’s way to Dylan on the right who played in Jack V, but just as he was about to shoot, Cornard put in a last ditch challenge. He wasn’t to be denied for long though.

Picking up the ball in the centre of the pitch, he played it out to Dylan on the right who drove at the Cornard defence and pulling the ball back from the byline to Jack V on the edge of the box who had followed his pass. He took a touch before drilling home.

Dylan was getting lots of action on the right, but we couldn’t make the space count with Cornard standing firm.

Another Cornard counter attack was this time dealt with Jude who was also playing centre back today. Jude calmly reading the game and intercepting between 2 players before setting us off on another attack.

From our first corner of the game, Jack V played short to Jack D who wiped in a cross that was cleared to George on the edge of the box. Unfortunately he couldn’t get his first time strike on target.

Soon after Sudbury had another corner. This time Jack V played it short to Leo who rounded his player before seeing his cross deflected in for an own goal.

Sudbury were really playing some nice football now and Jack V almost turned provider when playing in Leo behind the Cornard defence, only for the on rushing keeper to get there just before Leo.

Some more nice link up play on the right by Jack V and Dylan, but again Cornard defended well.

Another Cornard attack looked like they would pull one back, only for Jude to get back and put in a last ditch tackle when the Cornard attacker cut back inside and was about to shoot.

The goal of the game soon followed. Freddie putting pressure on their right back won the ball back and passed to Sasha. Sasha laid it off to Max who passes to Ron. Ron then played a nice 1-2 with Leo before sliding the ball under the keeper.

Another Cornard attack soon followed with George standing firm before the ball found it’s way to Ron who passed to Leo who had dropped deep into his own half. Leo got his head up and saw Jack V had space to run into and played a brilliant ball into his path behind the Cornard defence. Jack V raced onto the ball, controlled before poking into the bottom corner just past the on rushing keeper.

Sudbury kept pushing and Freddie almost created a goal when playing a nice 1-2 with Leo before drilling a cross across the box but no-one could get on the end to convert.

With the last attack of the half, it looked like Jack V would get his hat-trick. George passed to Leo who played in Dylan on the right. Dylan then slid the ball in to Jack V’s pass but he couldn’t keep his shot down and saw it go over the bar.

Half Time.

Sudbury started the half really quickly with Harry, now playing at right back for the 2nd half, winning the ball on the halfway line with his tackle which fell to George. George got his head up and played in Jack D whose control looped the ball up before he hit a half volley up and over the helpless Cornard goalkeeper.

Cornard soon pulled one back with a break down the left which was crossed in and the Cornard attacker got there just before Will.

Some good link up play on the left between Max, George and Leo saw Jack D released, but he pulled his shot just wide of the far post.

From the goal kick, Sudbury pressed their defence with Max winning it back and passing to Jack D who had his back to goal, chose to return the pass to Max. He then rounded his defender before slotting home.

A Cornard counter attack looked destined to bring another goal, only for Harry to somehow make up the ground and put in a last ditch tackle to prevent a shot on goal.

From the following GK, Leo picked up the loose ball and played a defence splitting pass that Max chased on to. Controlling the ball in his stride, he got away from the defenders chasing back before calmly spotting home for his 2nd goal of the game.

George was now trying to drive his team forward from midfield. Picking the ball up he rounded 2 Cornard players before crossing, but no one could get on the end of it, and Cornard quickly countered and broke away. Standing firm was Will to prevent another Cornard goal.

Leo, again dropping deep tried to play in Jack D, but he couldn’t catch up to the pass and the ball went out for a goal kick. The goal kick was collected by Leo who controlled and shot over the Cornard keeper and in.

Jack D looked like he had his 2nd of the game following some great pressing by Sudbury which saw Jack V cross and Jack D controlled and volleyed. It looked like a goal all the way, only for the keeper to some how get a hand to it and push onto the cross bar before the danger was cleared.

Sudbury’s play started to get sloppy with the boys all pushing forward wanting to score, but there were still good moments of play from Sudbury.

Jack V, still looking for his hat-trick played a nice 1-2 with George only to see his shot hit the side netting.

Freddie picking the ball up in defence, passed back to Will who controlled and passed out wide to Dylan at right back. Dylan played a first time pass through to Jack V who played a 1-2 with Leo, only to see his effort go just wide of the far post.

With the game coming to a close, Cornard broke down the left and none of the Sudbury players engaged the Cornard players, allowing them a free shot inside the 6 yard box to pull one back before the full time whistle was blown.

Some great play today from the boys, especially in the first half.

Today’s man of The Match being awarded to the player who gave everything in both halves and scored 2 goals on his 75th appearance but sadly couldn’t get the hat-trick his game deserved today. Well done Jack V.
